I've used my French in France (naturally!), Morocco, Haiti, Spain (!), Italy (!) and Korea (!!!), and have found it often leads to conversations and confidences I might not get to have if I only had American English.
To remain semi-fluent at least, and at best, to regain full fluency
To be able to speak conversationally without frequent pauses to locate the word I want in those dusty mental filing cabinets ...
I once feigned being a non-English-speaking Quebecoise in a ladies room in Morocco so I could listen to some American girls talk about the hashish they just scored. No interest myself, just being snoopy.
